Health Benefits of Himalayan Pink Salt

Himalayan pink salt is a salt mined in the foothills of the majestic Himalayan range in the northern region of India. This naturally translucent rock salt has an almost sparkling quality in addition to its normal pinkish hue. In fact, this salt was prized by the ancient Indians for its therapeutic properties long before it became popular as a household spice. This pinkish salt can be found in many different forms including salt bars, crystal salt products and salt crayons.

The popularity of Himalayan pink salt as a healthy food additive has grown in recent years because of the numerous reports of its health benefits. These benefits include; reduced blood pressure, reduced cholesterol, decreased diabetes, reduced risk of heart disease, improved circulation, improved digestion, and lowered symptoms of depression. Most of these benefits are due to the presence of trace minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It also contains trace amounts of zinc, manganese, copper, selenium, sodium, and phosphorus.

The potential benefits of Himalayan pink salts were originally studied and documented back in the 1970s. Scientists took samples of this “freshest of all salts” and analyzed them using various techniques. After careful study, scientists came to the conclusion that it had high amounts of magnesium and potassium, two minerals that are found in regular table salt. They also noticed that it had higher amounts of calcium, sodium and phosphorus than regular table salts.
